74 Gaza children killed in the first week of 2025
According to the report, the mentioned children were killed as a result of events such as the Zionist regime's night attacks on Gaza, Khan Yunis and the safe zone of al-Mawasi. Five children were killed in the latest Israeli attack on al-Mawasi.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said: "The new year has brought more death and suffering for children in Gaza from attacks, deprivation and exposure to the cold; many children have died or lost their loved ones in the tragic beginning of the new year."
She continued: "The continued lack of basic shelter, coupled with the cold of winter, is a serious threat to children; With more than a million children living in makeshift tents and many families displaced over the past 15 months, children face extreme risks.
Since December 26, eight babies in Gaza have reportedly died from hypothermia, a serious threat to infants who are unable to regulate their body temperature.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza is spiraling out of control; the number of aid trucks entering Gaza is insufficient to meet the most basic needs of families; the few remaining operational hospitals are under pressure; and the destruction of civilian infrastructure has left families struggling to access essential resources, including food, clean water, sanitation, and access to healthcare.
Kamal Adwan Hospital, the only operational health facility and the only hospital in northern Gaza with a pediatric unit, is no longer operational after an attack late last month; This has exacerbated the already dire conditions for medical care in the area.
UNICEF has long warned that inadequate shelter, lack of access to nutrition and healthcare, dire sanitation conditions and now the cold winter weather are putting the lives of all children in Gaza at risk.
