The Zionist regime's deliberate attack on aid convoys in Gaza
The shooting incident in which Israeli soldiers opened fire on one of the World Food Programme's (WFP) aid convoys in Gaza was strongly condemned by the WFP.
Near the Wadi Gaza checkpoint, a convoy of three vehicles transporting eight employees from central Gaza to Gaza City was struck by sixteen bullets.
The convoy was stopped, but no casualties were reported. The WFP report states that the vehicles had previous security clearance from Israeli authorities and were properly marked.
The agency said in a statement: "The World Food Programme strongly condemns the horrific incident of January 5. This unacceptable incident is just the latest example of the complex and dangerous working environment in which the WFP and other agencies operate today."
The WFP called for improved security conditions to ensure that humanitarian operations can continue unhindered.
The attack and the violation of international law have raised concerns about the safety of aid workers in Gaza, where international agencies have long accused Israeli forces of obstructing humanitarian efforts.
In a message, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini addressed the WFP statement and highlighted the risks that aid workers face.
At least 333 aid workers have been killed in Israeli attacks since the start of the Israeli occupation of Gaza. UNRWA alone has suffered devastating losses, with 258 of its staff killed.
The agency is now facing the prospect of a full ban imposed by the occupying authorities. Louise Wattridge, UNRWA’s chief emergency officer, warned that social order in Gaza would be further threatened if the Israeli regime continued with its plans to ban UNRWA.
16 shots fired at WFP convoy
"Our humanitarian efforts in Gaza are facing increasing obstacles," said Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, in a statement. "Israeli forces fired more than 16 shots at a UN convoy at a checkpoint between the southern and northern Gaza Strip," Fletcher added.
The Israeli attack targeted a vehicle belonging to a local community that was protecting part of a UN aid convoy. The UN official also said: "Israeli forces are not willing to guarantee the security of our convoys in the Gaza Strip."
He confirmed that the UN mission in Jabalia was confronted by Israeli soldiers who threatened critically ill patients; the Israelis arrested four members of the mission.
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs also said: The people of Gaza have endured more than 14 months of displacement, trauma, destruction of schools, hospitals, civilian infrastructure and famine.
