Execution of a prisoner in the United States
The 25th execution in the United States in 2024 took place Thursday local time in the state of Oklahoma when American prisoner Kevin Ray Underwood was put to death by lethal injection at the McAlester State Prison.
The US Death Penalty Information Center reported that this execution was the 25th execution carried out in the United States in 2024.
Of the 25 executions carried out in the United States this year, except for three executions by the controversial method of nitrogen hypoxia (asphyxiation with nitrogen), the rest of the executions were carried out by lethal injection.
The state of Indiana also carried out a death sentence by lethal injection last Wednesday after a 15-year hiatus.
This year, nine US states carried out executions: six in Alabama, five in Texas, four in Missouri, four in Oklahoma, two in South Carolina, and one each in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, and Utah.
27 of the 50 US states currently carry out executions; about 40 people are on federal death row in the US. Meanwhile, 26 new death sentences were issued in 2024.
