A caricature of American democracy
Syed Sajjad Vaez Liwari - US President Joe Biden presented a parody of American democracy in his last days in office by making the most of his position by pardoning his son Hunter.
The US Constitution grants the president the authority to pardon felons under specific circumstances. Every president typically makes use of this privilege in the final days of his presidency. After Thanksgiving, when American public opinion was entirely preoccupied with other matters, Biden took advantage of the fact that he had to formally cede power to Donald Trump on January 20th. In contrast to his earlier remarks, he used this opportunity to keep his son from receiving a lengthy prison sentence.
Biden had previously declared that he would not meddle in the US Department of Justice's operations or use such authority against his son. White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre reiterated this on November 8th, saying, “We’ve been asked this question many times. Our answer is consistent: no.” But Hunter Biden himself had pleaded guilty.
Hunter Biden initially disclosed that he was the subject of a federal investigation in December 2020, a month after Joe Biden was elected president. The accusations were "made after a number of my political opponents in Congress incited them to attack me and oppose my election," according to Biden at the time.
The 54-year-old Hunter Biden is charged with evading taxes by spending $1.4 million on drugs and luxury over the previous ten years. In addition, he is charged with a number of offenses that could result in five to twenty-five years in jail, including drug trafficking, illegal weapons, and corruption in Ukraine.
Hunter would avoid possible jail time for convictions on tax and gun-related charges thanks to the pardon. Hunter Biden was scheduled to be sentenced in less than two weeks on federal gun charges and two days later on a separate case involving federal tax evasion. However, Biden's action preceded his sentencing.
In the US, there has been a lot of backlash against US President Joe Biden's decision to pardon Hunter Biden. Biden's action has been criticized by several Democrats as "setting a bad precedent" and as disappointing. Biden's decision to pardon his son has also been characterized by some critics as self-serving.
Trump is alluding to the inmates who attacked the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021, as Trump supporters who refused to recognize the outcome of the last US election. On social media, a large number of Americans have likewise vented their rage. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a US congresswoman, even commented on X-Net that Joe Biden is a hypocrite and a liar throughout. Biden "will go down as one of the most corrupt presidents in American history," according to another congressman, Andy Biggs. "I stated in January of this year that Joe Biden would pardon Hunter in December," added US Senator Ted Cruz. Joe Biden did it on December 1st!
