The US Treasury Department was hacked
The US Treasury Department reported that hackers had managed to penetrate the security systems of the department's computers. In a letter to US Congressional lawmakers, the department described the cyberattack as a "major incident."
The US Treasury Department's letter says that hackers penetrated the cybersecurity service provider and were able to obtain unclassified documents.
According to the letter, the cybersecurity service provider warned about this on December 8 and is cooperating with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to assess the impact of the cyberattack.
The US Treasury Department has claimed that the Chinese government is behind the cyberattack.
On the other hand, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington denied any responsibility for Beijing's cyberattack, saying: "Beijing firmly opposes the notorious US attacks against China without any real basis."
