The terrible circumstances in the biggest prison in Georgia State
A 91-page report from the US Department of Justice claims that deadly violence, drug trafficking, murder, drug abuse, and stabbings are among the crises that plague Fulton Prison.
The number of overcrowding-related deaths at Fulton Prison prompted federal inspectors to review the conditions there; Lashawn Thompson's death in September 2022 made headlines both domestically in the United States and, of course, internationally.
The prison guards found the body of Thompson, who was suffering from mental illness, in the toilet of the cell covered in insects among the garbage, and the medical examiner declared the cause of death of this prisoner to be the negligence of the prison authorities. Thompson is one of dozens who have been killed or died at the Fulton prison in recent years.
Even though the number of deaths from murder and suicide has decreased, the US Department of Justice report reminds us that the death rate in this prison was still many times higher than the national average. This report claims that there have been over a thousand attacks, including 314 stabbings, at Fulton Prison in 2023. According to this report, the number of stabbing incidents at Fulton Prison in 2023 was 1.5 times higher than that of prisons in New York City and more than 27 times higher than that of prisons in Miami.
This report also highlights Fulton Prison's many physical issues, such as the absence of security facilities and the uninhabitability of some areas of the facility. There have also been reports of a drug abuse crisis in this awful prison.
Since 2022, there have been six murders at Fulton Prison. Two stabbings, two beating deaths, and two suffocation deaths were the causes of the deaths. However, there was no indication of any significant inquiries into security failures following violent prison deaths, according to the Justice Department report.
The state senator from Georgia commented on the report: "Today's report by the Department of Justice confirms that the mistreatment in Fulton Prison is not only horrific but also against the US Constitution, and this shows the state's inability to protect the Constitution and human rights."
A new $1.7 billion facility was recently requested by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office. Fulton officials, meanwhile, have resisted the plan, claiming they intend to spend $300 million renovating the prison. Fulton County was given 49 days by federal investigators to make changes or risk federal charges.
