France's prime ministerial election under threat and controversy

Left-wing parties in France are once again demanding the election of a left-leaning prime minister as French President Emmanuel Macron attempts to negotiate a coalition to form a new government.

Prior to the commencement of a fresh round of negotiations with the president and other parties, the French Socialists stated, according to Reuters, that the new French prime minister must come from the left and that any coalition government must be dedicated to addressing the cost of living and pension reforms.

The leader of the French Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, reiterated his threats in a letter to Macron that was delivered to the Elysee Palace prior to the negotiations. Faure stated that if Macron insisted on selecting a different right-wing prime minister, he would immediately withdraw from the negotiations.

Macron will meet with political parties to form a government, according to the Elysee's announcement. According to a source close to Macron, neither the LFI nor the far-right National Rally party want to attend the talks.
