Knife crime is becoming an out-of-control crisis across Europe, with Germany and the UK at the top of the list of countries affected and their policies seen as ineffective.

The UK is now known as the knife crime capital of the world due to the severity of the situation, and critics have referred to the inability of successive governments to address the issue as a national scandal.

The rate at which knife crime is increasing in the UK has become a major issue for the country's authorities. This is made even more concerning by studies that reveal a high percentage of children and teenagers are involved in this epidemic.

In its most recent study, the Office for Standards, Services, and Skills for Children (Ofsted) highlighted how knife crime and violence have a significant impact on the lives of children and teens.

The research explores the connection between the increase in violence and the exploitation of children in organized drug gangs and includes heartbreaking testimonies of youth and families impacted by severe knife violence.

Knife crime is destroying the lives of many youngsters in England, according to Ofsted's chief inspector, who stated, "It is a national scandal; it is distressing that even 11-year-olds are carrying knives for self-protection." "Research has shown that carrying knives has become the norm for some children," he said.

Children and young people in England are carrying knives for self-defense, and serious violence in the UK is a widespread problem that, contrary to popular belief, is not specific to any one ethnic group or population.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that knife crime has also increased significantly as violent crime rates rose in the year to June 2024. According to statistics, the UK recorded more than 50,000 knife crimes in the period, an increase of 4%. By assigning blame to others, the British government is also attempting to distance itself from this crime epidemic.

In the UK, knife crime is concentrated in major cities and makes up 30% of all crimes that are reported and looked into by the London Metropolitan Police and 10% by the West Midlands Police. Police forces nationwide report knife crimes at nearly record rates, and in 2020, the number of crimes and knife crimes in the UK surpassed 50,000.
