South Korean President Impeached

The impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-Yeol was approved by the South Korean parliament on Saturday.

 Following the vote, Yoon Seok-Yeol’s responsibilities will be passed to the prime minister and he will be suspended from office. The impeachment motion against Yoon Seok-Yeol was passed by 204 votes to 85.

This was the parliament's second attempt by opposition parties to remove Yoon from office.

Because there were no representatives from the ruling party present during the voting session, the first attempt to remove the South Korean president from office was unsuccessful.

A two-thirds majority of the 300 members of parliament had to support the impeachment motion against Yoon Seok-Yeol.

A new presidential election must be held within 60 days of the Constitutional Court's approval of the impeachment, which can take up to six months. Six members of the court must vote in favor of the impeachment.

200,000 people participated in a large-scale protest in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, prior to the start of the parliamentary voting session.
