Lebanon gets a new president after two years ‎

The army commander, "Joseph Aoun," became the 14th president of Lebanon after he received a majority of votes (65 or more) in the second round of today's Lebanese parliament session. In the initial round, the Lebanese army leader received 71 votes. This is the fifth time in Lebanon's history that a military officer has emerged victorious to become president.

The army commander, Joseph Aoun, received 99 votes in today's second round of voting, while Shibli Al-Mallat received just two. Additionally, 13 deputies cast the name "Rule of Law," while nine blank ballots and five invalid ballots were cast.

In the first round of today's session, none of the names presented by the deputies was able to obtain 86 votes, this number of votes is required for each candidate to enter the Baabda Palace in the first round.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Nabih Berri, presided over today's meeting of the Lebanese Parliament, which was attended by 128 lawmakers and ambassadors from Arab and other nations, including the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United States. ‎

The law stipulates that a two-thirds majority of the Parliament's members, or 128 representatives, must vote to elect the president. This includes 86 representatives in the first round of voting and an absolute majority of 65 representatives in the second round. ‎
